Tree up to 15 m tall, with a robust, highly branched trunk and dark brown, rough, cracked bark. Umbrella-shaped cup and permanent foliage. Feathery compound leaves, 15 to 30 cm long, with numerous 6 x 1 cm elongated leaves, covered with aromatic resin. White bisexual flowers, measuring 0.7 cm, grow in clusters in the axils of the leaves, up to 20 cm. Pollinated by insects. Small, fleshy red fruits, reddish when ripe, with single seed, are produced in hanging clusters.
Originally from Peru, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Sacred tree of Peru. Introduced in Mexico by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza (1490-1552) in 1550 where it grows cultivated and naturalized. It lives in bushes, grasslands and forests. Cultivated as a shade tree, medicinal and ornamental and for the extraction of tanning agents. It has been widely dispersed by many migratory birds. Schinus is the Greek name for the mastic, another tree in this family. Molle is the Peruvian name.
In Mexico it is also known as Pirul.
