Erect palm, hermaphrodite, generally with a straight trunk and formed in groups of different heights, up to 4 m in height and 6-10 cm in trunk diameter, covered by the persistent leaf sheaths and by the remains of the base of the petioles, becoming bare in their lower part over the years.
Palmate leaves, with a more or less circular blade, almost 1 m in diameter, bright green on the upper surface and paler on the underside. Interfoliar inflorescence, erect, longer than the leaves, yellowish or orange, divided into several hanging branches. Sessile bracteolate flowers. Globous or ovoid-globose fruits, 0.7-1 cm in diameter, orange, turning black at maturity; subglobose seed, 6-7 mm in diameter.
Flowers from June to August.
It can be found in places flooded periodically or permanently resisting conditions of high salinity, in lowlands and savannas.
