Shrub to tree up to 6 m high, sometimes branched from the base, with thin, smooth, gray bark that falls off in scales in the old specimens; the alternate, rounded and coriaceous leaves 10-20 cm long and up to 25 cm wide; the flowers are presented in clusters of up to 30 cm in length, greenish-white in color; the globose fruits 1-2 cm in diameter with a purple fleshy cover when ripe; the fruit contains a single seed; blooms between March and June, propagated by seeds.

This species is found throughout the coastline, forming an important part of the coastal dune vegetation.

This species is appreciated for its fruits in populations of the coastal area, as an ornamental plant it has little use, although it has great potential, for the coast it is recommended as a sand fixer and as a windbreak tree, it is sometimes used for treatment diarrhea, as a diuretic and for the treatment of venereal diseases.
