Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)

Package with 2 oz (56 grams) of fresh seeds collected this season for sowing.

Tree with beautiful flowers up to 6 m high, with branched trunk and mottled, smooth gray bark. Globose crown and foliage for a few months.

Red, white, pink or bisexual purple flowers, with very sharp petals, grow in 20 cm pyramidal clusters at the tips of the branches. Pollinated by birds and insects. Fruit is a capsule with 4 to 6 valves and small, triangular and flat seeds, with a crescent or triangle shaped wing.

It is a tree native to Asia and has been widely cultivated as an ornamental species and with a great variety of hybrids. It multiplies by seeds and by cuttings. It is also known as the jupiter tree and the queen of flowers (Lagerstroemia speciosa) and they live in Mexican cities.

It is advisable to sow in sunny places or in semi-shade. In very cold areas, a sunny position close to a south-facing wall is recommended, with deep, fertile and well-drained soils.

Temperature: When it is not a young specimen it resists frost, but not persistent. Although it tolerates the cold, it only flourishes in areas with hot summers and mild winters. Frequent waterings in spring and summer. During the remaining seasons of the year it should only be watered when the substrate is partially dry.
