Sacred Tree of the Maya
The Ceiba Pentandra, is a fast growing and supporting tree, when young, covers its trunk with large spines that disappear when the trunk becomes thick. It is native to the Mesoamerican region and is distributed worldwide through the intertropical zone.
It can exceed 60 to 70 meters in height, with straight trunk, thick, up to 3 more diameter, usually without branching forming a large cup with branches extended horizontally. Tabular roots several meters high and extended above and below the ground function as buttresses.
The tree is grown intensively in Asia, especially in Java (hence its appellate), Malaysia and Indonesia, but also in the Philippines and South America. Its cotton fiber, called miraguano or guata, is marketed. Kapok fiber is lightweight, very floating, resistant, highly flammable and waterproof. This fiber cannot be rotated, to roll it up, but it is used as a padding of mattresses, pillows, upholstery, dolls, and for insulation.
In southeastern Mexico, it is known as "the sacred tree of the Maya".
