Tree 10 to 12 meters high, with a short trunk, smooth greenish-gray bark. Oval cup, foliage for a few months. Feathery compound leaves up to 40 cm long with 4 to 8 pairs of leaflets.

Yellow bisexual flowers with broad petals, protruding stamens, are produced in hanging clusters with numerous rows of flowers. Fruit in an elongated, cylindrical pod 30 to 60 cm long, smooth and dark brown, with several round, elliptical 9 mm, shiny brown seeds with a longitudinal groove, housed in separate compartments of the pod. It enters full bloom in the month of May.

Native to South Asia, from Pakistan to Sri Lanka and Burma. It is the flower (konna) of the state of Kerala in India and has ritual importance in the Vishu festival, to celebrate the new year. It was brought in the 19th century to Yucatán as an ornamental flowering tree. Bees and bumblebees feed on its nectar and pollen. It is a favorite in the Mayan towns and suburbs of Yucatan or in parks. It has been used extensively as an ornamental and as a laxative remedy. (Conabio)
