Semillas de Chihua Calabaza (Cucurbita argyrosperma)

Chihua squash is native to Mesoamerica (Mexico and Central America to Panama), in Mexico it is located on the tropical coasts: Veracruz and Tamaulipas in the Gulf and Sonora to Chiapas in the Pacific: Chiapas, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Sinaloa , Sonora, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.

The Cucurbita species bear some resemblance to each other, but the species can be recognized by the color and shape of the seeds and by the shape of the peduncle and calyx. The Flora of Veracruz notes that it is possible to confuse this species with Cucurbita okeechobeensis in a vegetative state. The latter species occurs in more humid climates, but the species can occur together in the state. But, this species has pale yellow flowers and grayish-greenish seeds.

The genus Cucurbita is recognized within the Cucurbitaceae by having three filaments still separated at the base, but fused in the part of the anthers, numerous seeds, the corolla yellow and lobed to less than half its length, indehiscent fruit (not se open) with pulp.

The species is recognized by having mature seeds of brown color (not greenish or grayish), without the thickened margin, very short or non-existent calyx tube of the male flowers and the yellow-orange flower. The wild form of Cucurbita argyrosperma (which is ssp. Sororia) is recognized as having bitter, small (up to 10 cm) fruits with white pulp (Conabio)
